Cobra Martial Arts

Last Saturday I was invited to pop along to Cobra Martial Arts over in Airdrie to get some photos. This was a fantastic new experience for me, taking photos of fighting. I’ve always enjoyed watching this type of sport on TV now I got to get in close with the camera for some action shots.

They have a cracking dojo set in a basement on Alexander street. It’s a really good set-up. Not too big, which lets them get really personal. James gave us the tour before they got down to some serious sparring.

These guys can move like lightning and pack some serious power. Everyone was a complete gentleman and it was a good thing they were wearing protective padding!

I brought along my studio equipment too so we could get some on location portraits. It was a nice change of setting using the lights and modifiers in the gym. We got some atmospheric punch bag shots before we used the ring for some dramatic portraits using a 3 light set up. I wanted to imitate a real fight scenario with a bit of atmosphere and intensity.

All going well you’ll see some more of this stuff from me in the future. I cant wait to get ringside at some real fights. The photographers get the best seats in the house after all!
